Attendance

Information for reporting absences, arranging student pick-up, managing appointments and following school attendance procedures.

Preferred contact method hhsattendance@holmen.k12.wi.us Attendance Office 608-526-2813

Email is preferred for time-sensitive matters

We recommend copying your student on the email so they know when they will be leaving. The Attendance Office can reply to both of you to confirm that a pass is waiting in the office. If you call and there is no answer, please leave a voicemail. We receive many calls each day, and voicemail is checked frequently.

Dropping off items for your student

If you need to drop off an item for your student during the school day, from 7:35 a.m. to 2:47 p.m., please use the two-stage entrance at the Attendance Office. All other doors are locked during the school day.

Please clearly label the item with your student’s first and last name.

Appointments during the school day

Please notify the Attendance Office if your student has an appointment during the school day. Once the office hears from a parent or guardian, staff will prepare a dismissal pass and email the student to pick it up. The student will give the pass to their teacher before leaving.

Please also notify the Attendance Office if your student has an appointment before school.

Dropping off or picking up a student

Parents and guardians do not need to enter the building when dropping off or picking up a student during the school day, from 7:35 a.m. to 2:47 p.m.

As long as you have notified the Attendance Office in advance, staff will send your student outside at the designated time. You may contact the office ahead of time whenever you know your student will be absent or leaving early.

Closed campus and unexcused departures
Holmen High School is not an open campus

Students may not leave campus during the school day, including during lunch, without parent or guardian permission communicated to the Attendance Office.

If a student leaves between 7:35 a.m. and 2:47 p.m. without the office hearing from a parent or guardian, the student will be marked with an unexcused absence.

If the student returns without parent or guardian communication—or without a medical note after leaving for an appointment—the student will be stopped in the Attendance Office and must speak with an administrator before returning to class.

Parent-excused days

Parents and guardians may excuse a student from school for up to 10 days each school year. These days are used for illnesses, vacations, sports not affiliated with the school and other absences or appointments that are not medically excused.

For medical, dental or eye appointments, we strongly encourage families to obtain a provider’s note. This allows the absence to be medically excused without using one of the 10 parent days.

After the 10-day limit has been exceeded, additional absences will be marked unexcused. If a parent or guardian contacts the Attendance Office, the student’s record will note that the absence was acknowledged by the parent or guardian.

Vacations and trips of three or more days

If your student will miss three or more school days for a vacation or trip, a parent or guardian must first notify the Attendance Office.

The student must then visit the Attendance Office to pick up a vacation/trip homework request form. The student should take the form to each teacher for a signature and return the completed form to the Attendance Office before leaving for the trip.

10 Parent days

Save parent-excused days when possible

Obtain a provider’s note for medical, dental and eye appointments so the absence can be recorded as medically excused.
